Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of March, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
G14 substation Replacement
- Crews from 3TC and EJ Electric will continue to perform finishing work throughout the month of March
- This work may require intermittent road closures
- The G14 Substation is one of several substations along the Main Line being replaced or modified with new modern equipment
Wall Construction
- Crews continue to excavate, install subbase and ballast retaining wall along 2nd Ave with expected completion within the month. As a result, some parking may be temporarily affected
New Hyde Park Station Enhancements
- 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass is open. Riders can now use this newly installed station element to switch between westbound and eastbound platforms at S12th St.
- 3TC is finishing its work on canopy columns, platform guardrails, and platform roofing throughout the station. Light fixtures, pavers, bollards, and other items that surround the station will also be installed
- Rehabilitation work including electrical, brick and glass enhancements on New Hyde Park Station house is nearing completion
- Final on-street and platform signage being installed
- NHP Station is expected to be substantially complete by the end of March
3rd Track Construction
- Crews from J-Track will continue installing the 3rd Track ties and rails from S11th St to Denton Ave
Nassau 3 Interlocking & Signal System and Divide 1 System
- The new system is a necessary component of a comprehensive modernization effort to streamline operations, optimize flexibility, and ensure the safe movement of trains along the corridor
- Crews are continuing to work toward the cutover (scheduled for the weekend of 3/12) of the New Nassau 3 Interlocking & Signal System and Divide 1 System from School Street to the Wantagh State Parkway along the right of way
Upcoming Double Track Outages
- In this instance, a double track outage means both tracks on the Main Line are planned to go out of service, enabling critical infrastructure improvements during the weekend when LIRR service interruptions do not affect peak commuting hours
- To reduce the overall project schedule Both 3TC and LIRR crews may work during these double track outages
- In the month of March, four double track outages are scheduled — March 5-7, 12-14, 19-21, 26-28.
- During the weekends of 3/19-3/21 and 3/26-3/28, crews will be removing and installing new track switches. Residents may hear louder noises and feel vibrations during this work. Your patience is greatly appreciated while this critical work takes place
