Work to move the 27-foot-long, 1,000-ton concrete structure into place over the weekend is the last phase of a two year journey to eliminate all eight grade crossings along the LIRR Expansion Project corridor
In July 2019, crews from 3rd Track Constructors and MTA-Long Island Rail Road endured extreme heat to install a 40-foot-long, 1,200 ton concrete underpass as part of the Urban Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project – the first of eight crossings to be removed. Now, almost two years later to the day, the eighth and final underpass will be put in place.
On the weekend of July 10-11, a double-track outage will occur as crews install the underpass beneath the LIRR Main Line at Willis Avenue. The construction will require special weekend service and timetables. For more information and alternate travel routes, please click here.
The installation of the Willis Avenue underpass beneath the Main Line is a significant milestone for the LIRR Expansion Project, which is improving safety and reliability and enhancing the overall quality of life in communities along the railroad. Starting with the Urban Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination in 2019, construction crews have used the innovative “box-jacking” technique to efficiently install massive concrete U-structures at grade crossings along the project corridor. Crews will use box-jacking once again on this final installation, with workers employing hydraulic jacks to inch the multi-ton concrete structure into place. This will be done over the course of the weekend and allow the tracks to be back in service for Monday morning rush hour. The completed Willis Avenue project will lead to a new traffic pattern that was developed in close coordination with the community during an extensive planning process.
As always, crews will be “piggy-backing” during the double track outage weekend to complete additional work along the project corridor. Residents may notice increased activity, including overnight work, in order to restore service by Monday morning.
