Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of July, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass
- Crews are currently working to relocate underground utilities from South 12th Street to South 11th
- As a result, 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenues will experience intermittent closures between South 11th Street and South 12th Street through the second week of July
- Construction on the South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass is expected to be complete this Fall. The new concrete box structure was successfully installed for the new South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass during one weekend in June. The ADA compliant underpass will maintain connectivity and access to both the north and south sides of the tracks. Wall Construction
- Crews are working to install wall panels from Covert Avenue to New Hyde Park Station along the right of way, on the south side of the tracks
- As a result, parking along 3rd Avenue will be reduced for the duration of this activity
- Intermittent road closures may be necessary in order to facilitate material deliveries to the area
- Upon completion of this project activity, in July, crews will begin working to install wall on the north side of the tracks, along 2nd Avenue
- As a result, parking along 2nd Avenue will be reduced for the duration of this activity
- Intermittent road closures may be necessary in order to facilitate material deliveries to the area
G14 Substation Replacement
- Crews from 3TC and EJ Electric will continue to work on the necessary electrical utilities that feed the G14 Substation
- The G14 Substation is one of several substations along the Main Line being replaced or modified with new modern equipment.
New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- Support of excavation (SOE) will be installed and extracted along the north and south side of New Hyde Park Station
- Renovations on the station house are progressing including electrical upgrades, brick, and glass installation
- Precast platform foundations will be installed on both sides of the tracks along with canopy piers and roofing, guardrails, and railings for stairs and ramps
- EJ Electric will continue to install conduit along the right of way
New Hyde Park Road Underpass
- During July, crews from EJ Electric will be performing installing CCTV camera and security devices beneath the Covert Avenue Underpass
- This activity is expected to last approximately three days, and will require a single lane closure to complete
- Flaggers will be present to assist with two-way traffic during this operation
Covert Avenue Underpass
- During July, crews from EJ Electric will be installing CCTV camera and security devices beneath the Covert Avenue Underpass
- This activity will occur overnight for approximately one week, between the hours of 7pm and 5am and will require a single lane closure to complete
- Two-way traffic will function with flaggers during this operation
Double Track Outages
- A double track outage has been scheduled for the Main Line on July 10th and 11th
- To reduce the overall project schedule, the project team will use this double-track outage to complete other activities in proximity to the tracks
- During this time, residents will likely notice increased activity along the right-of-way
- To ensure restoration of rail service by Monday mornings, crews will be working both during the day and through the overnight hours
LIRR Work Along the Railroad Right-of-way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
