This weekend, MTA Construction & Development, LIRR, and 3rd Track Constructors made history once again with the successful installation of the new concrete underpass beneath the Oyster Bay Branch at Willis Avenue. Check out some of the scenes from this historic weekend.
A view from above. Starting overnight, crews began to install the new underpass at Willis Avenue, after successfully eliminating 8 grade crossings along the project corridor.
Box-jacking begins. What used to take days or weeks is now completed in a single weekend thanks to the box-jacking technique. With box-jacking, workers built a multi-ton concrete structure onsite and then use hydraulic jacks to inch the structure into place, drastically reducing the amount of time the tracks need to be out of service.
Don’t blink! The new underpass appears nearly complete on Sunday morning as crews worked through the night.
Crews put on the finishing touches as the baton is passed to the railroad team to install tracks and complete the installation in time for Monday morning.
