The LIRR Expansion Project has successfully eliminated all eight grade crossings along the project corridor between Floral Park and Hicksville. During the weekend of June 26-27, crews will be in action to install a new concrete underpass beneath the Oyster Bay Branch at Willis Avenue, requiring a double-track outage. As a result, special weekend service and timetables will be in effect. For more information and alternate travel routes, please click here. Another double-track outage will take place over the weekend of July 10-11, as crews install a second underpass beneath the Main Line at Willis Avenue.
Design-build contractor 3TC will use “box-jacking” to install these approximately 30-foot long and more than 1,000-ton concrete vehicular underpasses, which reduces the amount of time the tracks need to be out of service. With the box-jacking technique, workers build a multi-ton concrete structure onsite and then use hydraulic jacks to inch the structure into place. The Willis Avenue underpasses and the new traffic configuration were developed in close coordination with the community during an extensive planning process.
In addition to the work on Willis Avenue in Mineola, 3TC and LIRR crews will utilize the double-track outage to perform other essential rail system improvement work. Residents may notice an increased level of activity as the project team optimizes the use of the weekend outage and minimizes the overall community disruption. Crews will be working through the overnight hours to ensure rail service is restored by Monday morning.
