With wall construction behind New Cassel’s Dryden Street Elementary School now complete, MTA Construction & Development, MTA Long Island Rail Road, and the LIRR Expansion Project team have met yet another important community commitment. These walls will enable the LIRR to build within the right of way and serve as a sound barrier for passing trains.
Since the beginning of construction, Community Ambassador Seth Sylvan and the Community Outreach Team have been in close communication with Dryden Street Elementary School and their principal Gloria P. Dingwall to ensure the new walls were constructed safely and efficiently, with minimal impact to learning. Our Community Outreach Team delivered coloring books and spent a day with some kindergarten students to talk about the LIRR Expansion Project and safety on the railroad in the Spring of 2019. The positive relationship has continued even as the School incorporated remote learning as required by COVID-19 safety guidelines. In January of this year, the Community Outreach Team gave virtual presentations to more than 200 students to explain the recently completed School Street Grade Crossing Elimination.
“The Dryden Elementary School led by Principal Dingwall and her staff have been the consummate partner during our work in the surrounding area,” said Community Ambassador Seth Sylvan. “From the start, the school has understood the importance of this capital improvement project and has kept a consistent two-way line of communication to alleviate any disruptions to their daily schedule. We commend Principal Dingwall for leveraging the relationship and creating educational experiences for the children ranging from 3TC guest speakers during Career Day to distribution of construction educational coloring books to virtual reading time.”
Thank you to the Hamlet of New Cassel and Dryden Street Elementary School for their spirit of cooperation throughout the process.
