New Hyde Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of March, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- On Monday, March 15th, eastbound and westbound 10-car platforms will open between New Hyde Park Road and South 12th Street
- Ingress and egress to the station will be available along 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue, between South 12th Street and New Hyde Park.
- Click here view the LIRR notification with a map of the station.
- Following the opening of the 10-car platforms, the temporary station, from South 12th Street to Covert Avenue, will be removed.
- Crews will begin to build additional platforms west of South 12th Street following the demolition of the temporary station.
- These additional platforms will create the future 12-car permanent platform length
- Following the commissioning of the New Nassau 1 Interlocking & Signal System, the Main Line tracks have been renamed to conform to the future permanent system accounting for three tracks. Read more about this change here
- Renovations on the station house will continue including electrical upgrades, brick, and glass installation
- Crews from EJ Electric are installing underground utilities in the New Hyde Park Station area throughout the month of March
- Crews will begin to build additional platforms west of South 12th Street following the demolition of the temporary station.
South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass
- Crews are continuing to form and pour the walls of the new ADA compliant pedestrian underpass
- The construction of the pedestrian underpass requires a double track outage “bridge push,” similar to the bridge push installations occurring on grade crossing eliminations as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. A U-structure will be pushed underneath the tracks during a double track outage in the second quarter of 2021
- The new ADA compliant South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass will maintain connectivity and access to both the north and south sides of the tracks
- Click here to view the pedestrian detour, in effect until the opening of the underpass in 2021, and the new permanent vehicular traffic route
G14 Substation Replacement
- Work on the G14 Substation is progressing on the corner of South 9th Street and 3rd Avenue
- The prefabricated substation building is scheduled to be delivered to the site over one weekend in March
- Click here to read more about this project activity
- Following the delivery of the substation building, crews from EJ Electric will continue working in the area performing the necessary electrical.
- Those activities will include the installation of above ground utility poles within the footprint of the property.
- These steel poles are scheduled to be installed toward the latter end of March
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Nassau 1 Interlocking
- Following the commissioning and cut over of the New Nassau 1 Interlocking & Signal System, which occurred over the weekend of February 27th, crews will begin to remove old switches and outdated equipment along the right-of-way
- Residents will see crews working overnight on this activity throughout the month of March
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- Permanent wooden and steel utility poles have been installed along the railroad right-of-way throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
- Crews will begin to safely relocate cables from temporary poles to permanent poles
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
- Intermittent lane closures may be necessary in order to facilitate this work
- Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
LIRR Work Along The Railroad Right-Of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
