Floral Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of March, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Floral Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
Plainfield Avenue Bridge Modification Project
- Bird netting will be installed underneath the newly modified Plainfield Avenue Bridge this month
- Intermittent lane closures will be necessary to facilitate this work. Flaggers will be present to help assist with the flow of traffic
- The Plainfield Avenue Bridge is one of seven bridges to be replaced or modified along the LIRR Main Line and has been built to support the new third track
Floral Park Station Enhancement Project
- Crews are continuing the process of commissioning and testing the new Floral Park Station elevators to ensure complete functionality and safety requirements are met
- Temporary barricades will be removed once the elevators have been completed
- Elevators will be ADA-compliant and will provide easier access to the platforms on both sides of the station
- The elevators are expected to be open for public use this winter
Wall Construction
- Sound wall installation is expected to begin along the right-of-way, behind the homes on Charles Street, from Main Avenue to Beechhurst Avenue.
- Construction on this wall will occur from the tracks on weekends
- Retaining wall construction is underway along the Hempstead Branch, from Tunnel Street heading east into the retention basin along the north side of the tracks.
- This retaining wall is being installed to support new railroad switches on the Hempstead Branch
- These switches will allow trains to move from track to track more easily
- Crews will continue to excavate and set wall panels along the right-of-way throughout March
- Preparatory work for retaining wall construction along the right of way, on the south side of the tracks, from Carnation Avenue to Childs Avenue has begun
- Atlantic Avenue, between Carnation Avenue and Childs Avenue, will be limited to local traffic only for the duration of this activity
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Nassau 1 Interlocking
- Following the commissioning and cut over of the New Nassau 1 Interlocking & Signal System, which occurred over the weekend of February 27th, crews will begin to remove old switches and outdated equipment along the right-of-way.
- Residents will see crews working overnight on this activity throughout the month of March
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- Permanent wooden utility poles have been installed along the railroad right-of-way throughout the Village of Floral Park
- Crews will safely relocate cables from temporary poles to permanent poles
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of Floral Park
- Intermittent lane closures may be necessary in order to facilitate this work
- Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of Floral Park
