New Hyde Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of February, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass
- Crews are continuing to form and pour the walls of the new ADA compliant pedestrian underpass
- The construction of the pedestrian underpass requires a double track outage “bridge push,” similar to the bridge push installations occurring on grade crossing eliminations as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. A U-structure will be pushed underneath the tracks during a double track outage in the second quarter of 2021
- The new ADA compliant South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass will maintain connectivity and access to both the north and south sides of the tracks.

New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- On February 22nd, following the commissioning of the New Nassau 1 Interlocking & Signal System, the Main Line tracks will be renamed to conform to the future permanent system accounting for three tracks. The naming system as follows will affect Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place, and Westbury Stations:
- Track 3 – Westbound platform (north)
- Track 1 – Currently accessible eastbound platform (south)
- Track 2 – Future 3rd track (currently under construction)
- Updated station signs will reflect this information
- Construction of the permanent platforms at New Hyde Park Station is progressing
- A temporary platform is being constructed in front of the new permanent platform on the south side of the tracks. This temporary condition will exist until the third track is complete and functioning along the corridor
- On the north side of the station, crews are installing canopy roofing and art glass
- On the south side of the station, under platform barrier is being installed as well as guardrails and railings for stairs and ramps
- Renovations on the station house will continue including electrical upgrades, brick, and glass installation
- Crews from EJ Electric are installing underground utilities in the New Hyde Park Station area throughout the month of February
- For the remainder of the work, signage and detours are in place to help customers access the station. Click here to view the LIRR notification with a map of the new temporary station.
G14 Substation Replacement
- Work on the G14 Substation is progressing on the corner of South 9th Street and 3rd Avenue
- Crews from EJ Electric will begin work on underground conduits the first week of February.
- These underground conduits serve to provide the necessary power to the substation
- Once the conduits are installed, crews will backfill the area
- The prefabricated substation building is scheduled to be delivered to the site over one weekend in March
- Please click here for more information on this project element
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Wall Construction
- Wall construction will continue on the north side of the tracks, from 4th Street to Covert Avenue
- Precast retaining wall panels will be installed along the track overnight for approximately two weeks
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Nassau 1 Interlocking
- Over the weekend of February 20-21, the new Nassau 1 Interlocking & Signal System will be commissioned
- Crews from 3TC, their subcontractors, and LIRR will be present along the corridor from Floral Park through Mineola during the weekend double track outage to commission the new system
- Following the commissioning and cut over of the New Nassau 1 Interlocking & Signal System, crews will begin to remove old switches and outdated equipment along the right-of-way
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- Permanent wooden and steel utility poles have been installed along the railroad right-of-way throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
- Crews will safely relocate cables from temporary poles to permanent poles
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
- Intermittent lane closures may be necessary in order to facilitate this work
- Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
LIRR Work Along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
