New Hyde Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of January, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass
- Crews are continuing to excavate for the new pedestrian underpass on both the north and south sides of the tracks
- Following excavation, crews will begin to form the walls of the underpass
- The construction of the pedestrian underpass requires a double track outage “bridge push,” similar to the bridge push installations occurring on grade crossing eliminations as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. A U-structure will be pushed underneath the tracks during a double track outage in the second quarter of 2021
- The new ADA compliant South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass will maintain connectivity and access to both the north and south sides of the tracks.

New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- Construction of the permanent platforms at New Hyde Park Station is progressing
- Crews will begin to construct a temporary platform in front of the new permanent platform on the south side of the tracks
- This temporary condition will exist until the third track is complete and functioning along the corridor
- Renovations on the station house will continue including electrical upgrades, brick, and window installation
- Crews from EJ Electric are installing underground utilities in the New Hyde Park Station area throughout the month of January
- For the remainder of the work, signage and detours are in place to help customers access the station. Click here to view the LIRR notification with a map of the new temporary station.
- Crews will begin to construct a temporary platform in front of the new permanent platform on the south side of the tracks
G14 Substation
- Work on the G14 Substation is progressing on the corner of South 9th Street and 3rd Avenue
- Concrete pouring for the substation foundations will occur this month
- Following the pouring and curing of the concrete, crews will return to the site to strip the concrete forms
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
- The G14 substation structure is expected to be delivered to the site in March 2021
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- Permanent wooden and steel utility poles have been installed along the railroad right-of-way throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
- Crews will begin to safely relocate cables from temporary poles to permanent poles
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
- Intermittent lane closures may be necessary in order to facilitate this work
- Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- Once utility lines have been relocated, temporary utility poles will begin to be removed throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
LIRR Work Along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
