New Hyde Park – Highlights on Upcoming Construction

New Hyde Park

Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.

During the month of December, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:

South 12th Street Grade Crossing Elimination Project

• Utility crews are progressing the relocation of utilities at South 12^th Street
• Following utility relocation, crews will be installing support of excavation (SOE) along the north and south sides of the tracks from approximately South 12^th Street to South 11^th
  • The installation of SOE requires heavy machinery including vibratory hammers, pile drivers, and cranes
  • Following the installation of SOE, crews will work to excavate for the new pedestrian underpass
• The installation of the pedestrian underpass requires a double track outage “bridge push,” similar to the bridge push installations occurring on grade crossing eliminations as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. A U-structure will be pushed underneath the tracks during a double track outage in the spring of 2021
• The new ADA compliant South 12th Street Pedestrian Underpass will maintain connectivity and access to both the north and south sides of the tracks.

New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project

• Platform foundations and platform slabs are continuing to be installed along New Hyde Park Station. Stairs and ramps will receive railings and under platform barriers will be installed throughout the month of December
• Exterior renovation on the New Hyde Park Station is continuing with brick and carpentry improvements
• Construction is continuing at the north and south support buildings, which is necessary for the maintenance of the new station

New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project

• As part of 3TC’s commitment to the community, landscaping at New Hyde Park Road has begun.
• Crews will continue to work on punch list items at the underpass throughout the month of December

G14 Substation

• Work on the G14 Substation is progressing on the corner of South 9^th Street and 3^rd Avenue
• In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
• The G14 substation structure is expected to be delivered to the site in Winter 2021

Permanent Utility Pole Installation

• Crews from EJ Electric have substantially completed setting permanent utility poles along the railroad right-of-way throughout the Village of New Hyde Park
  • Crews will now work to safely relocate cables from temporary poles to permanent poles
  • Intermittent lane closures may occur to help facilitate this work
  • 3TC will coordinate closely with property owners prior to any necessary and anticipated power outages
• Residents will see crews in the Village working on the removal of temporary poles throughout the month of December
• Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work

LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way

• In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
  • Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
• To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
