As part of the LIRR Expansion Project, customers who use stations from Floral Park to Westbury will benefit from improvements that range from new elevators to complete reconstruction. Work at these stations has continued, despite the added challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
By the time we’re finished with the overall project, expected by the close of 2022, you’ll see an array of new improvements at each of these stations that include:
- Platform removal/replacement
- New platform canopies
- ADA-compliant elevators and ramps
- Safety improvements like CCTV security cameras
- New platform furnishings like benches, shelters, signage, USB charging stations
- Free public Wi-Fi, digital displays
- Bike racks, art
Here’s a look at the tremendous progress made so far:
Floral Park
This station, at the western end of the project corridor, is being made fully ADA accessible as we add three elevators – one for each platform. We’re currently installing steel frames for the elevators, as well as electrical and communications systems. Work at Floral Park is scheduled to be completed by year’s end.

New Hyde Park
Temporary platforms are in use west of the station, which is being completely rebuilt. Existing platforms have been demolished and work is underway to rebuild them. Work on the pedestrian underpass at S. 12th Street also is progressing. Construction is expected to be completed early next year.

Merillon Avenue
Installation of stairs, ramps and walkways; elevators; canopy steel; brick work and platforms are all proceeding. Completion is expected next year.

Mineola
Temporary platforms are now open in anticipation of demolishing the existing platforms, followed by construction of new platforms. The existing pedestrian bridge will be demolished this summer and a new one built by next year 2021, completing this project.

Carle Place
This station is undergoing complete reconstruction with new platform and canopy installation well underway. Construction of a new pedestrian overpass is also moving ahead and will be followed by elevator construction. Construction of a roundabout on Stonehinge Lane will begin soon and rebuilding of the station will be completed in late 2020.

Westbury
