New Hyde Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of July, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project
DOUBLE TRACK OUTAGE JULY 11 – 12
- During the weekend of July 11-12, a double track outage on the LIRR’s Main Line will allow the existing tracks to be demolished, and the newly built U-structure, which supports a new steel track bed, will be jacked into place using a box-jacking method previously used at Covert Avenue and Urban Avenue
- Train service will be suspended between New Hyde Park and Hicksville during this time. For up-to-date service information please visit MTA.info/LIRR
- The newly constructed bridge will hold three tracks, along with a five-lane grade-separated underpass, pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides of the roadway, as well as a dedicated left-turn lane from southbound New Hyde Park Road onto Clinch Avenue
- Plaza Avenue, between Herkomer Street and New Hyde Park Road, has been realigned to become a two-way street, and regraded to meet the new roadway
- A new signal is being installed at the New Hyde Park Road and Plaza Avenue intersection to assist with the flow of traffic
- The new surface lot at 115 New Hyde Park Road is nearly complete. Parking lot striping will occur in anticipation of the reopening of New Hyde Park Road
- For the remainder of the closure, signage and detour plans are in place throughout the area. Click here to see the vehicular detour map, and here to see the pedestrian detour map. To access the temporary NICE Bus route, please click here
- New Hyde Park Road is expected to be open by Labor Day
New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- Crews are continuing the progression of platform canopies on the north and south sides of the tracks through the month of July
- These canopies with be enclosed with brick once they have been erected
- Work is expected to commence on the New Hyde Park Station house in late July
- Enhancements on this project element are being closely coordinated with the Village of New Hyde Park
- Construction is continuing on the south support building, which is necessary for the maintenance of the new station
- On the north and south side of the tracks, the walls of the South 12th Street Underpass have been formed with concrete. Future work underneath the tracks will connect the north and south sides of the pedestrian underpass
- Residents will see crews working both on weekends and overnight hours to meet the expedited construction schedule for this crucial project element
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
- Commuters will continue to access a temporary 10-car platform, which runs along 2nd and 3rd Avenues, between South 12th Street and South 8th Street
- For the remainder of the work, signage and detours are in place to help customers access the station. - Pole setting in the Village is expected to be substantially complete this month
- Residents will see crews working during days and overnights on this project element
- For more information on this project element click here
- Once the poles are installed, crews will safely relocate cables from temporary poles to the permanent poles
- Heavy construction equipment including cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- 3TC is contractually committed to performing ongoing environmental monitoring including air quality, vibration levels, and noise levels
Wall Construction
- Wall construction on the north side of the tracks will continue from Covert Avenue heading west to 2nd Street
- As a result, residents will see crews working along 2nd Avenue for approximately three weeks
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
- On the south side, from 6th Avenue heading east to Covert Avenue, wall installation is anticipated to occur this summer
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
