Mineola
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of July, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Mineola:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
Glen Cove Road Bridge Replacement Project
- Over a single weekend in late June, the Glen Cove Road Bridge was replaced with a newly built, three-bay bridge structure. Click here to read more about the milestone
- Finishing work is continuing on the bridge until approximately August
- As a result, lane closures may be necessary to help facilitate the completion of work. Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) signage will be in place to help pedestrians navigate the area.
- The Glen Cove Road Bridge is one of seven bridges to be replaced or modified along the LIRR Main Line and will be built to support the new third track
Mineola Station Enhancement Project
- The Mineola Station Enhancement Project has begun. As a result, commuters will continue to access temporary platforms and walkways, extending westward off of the existing platforms
- Click here to see the LIRR service change notification with more information on available ingress and egress points
- Throughout July, demolition of the existing station platforms and south station building will continue
- Support of excavation is being installed in the area to support the construction
- Heavy machinery is used for this activity, including power moles, pile drivers, excavators, bucket trucks and more
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Preparatory work is continuing as construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) work to relocate both above and below ground utilities
- Willis Avenue, between 2nd Street and Old Country Road, is currently closed to southbound traffic to accommodate for utility relocation
- Access to the western portion of 3rd Street, between Willis Avenue and Main Street, is closed. This portion of 3rd Street will be accessible to two-way local traffic from Main Street for the duration of this work
- Front Street, between Willis Avenue and Main Street, is only accessible from the northbound lane on Willis Avenue
- Utility relocation and installation is substantially complete along 2nd Street
- Intermittent closures of 2nd Street, between Willis Avenue and Main Street, may be necessary to complete the utility relocations in this area
- Residents may see crews from EJ Electric in the area of Willis Avenue working on the temporary relocation of utilities throughout the month of July
- Utilities are currently being installed along Hinck Way. As a result, Hinck Way may be closed to traffic during day-shift
- National Grid is performing ongoing utility installation along Main Street on behalf of the Village of Mineola
- As a result, Main Street, between Front Street and 2nd Street, is currently closed to vehicular traffic
- Access to Front Street is restricted from Main Street. This roadway is only accessible from the northbound lane on Willis Avenue.
- Vehicles are encouraged to use alternate routes. Click here for detour map.
- This preparatory work is being done in anticipation of the closure of Willis Avenue
Wall Construction
- Sound wall installation has begun on the south side of the tracks from Roslyn Road, heading east toward Glen Cove Road
- Crews are installing metal caissons in sequence to provide the necessary support for the wall posts
- Residents along Albertson Place will see crews working along the right-of-way on this project element
- Heavy construction equipment, including excavators, boom trucks, pile drivers, cranes, front loaders, and more, are needed for this work
- Along the right-of-way, beginning at Herricks Road and heading east toward Mineola Station, the installation of sound and retaining walls on the north side of the tracks is ongoing
- Wall installation is nearing completion on the south side of the tracks along this stretch of the right-of-way
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- Temporary above-ground utility relocation is ongoing throughout the Village of Mineola
- Intermittent lane closures and power outages are expected to occur to help facilitate this work
- 3TC will coordinate closely with property owners prior to any necessary and anticipated power outages
- EJ Electric and 3TC are coordinating closely with the Village of Mineola to lessen the effects of road closures within the Village
- Crews from EJ Electric are working during the day and overnight setting permanent utility poles along the railroad right-of-way
- Once the poles are installed, crews will be able to safely relocate cables from temporary poles to the permanent poles
- Heavy construction equipment including vacuum trucks, cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- 3TC is contractually committed to performing ongoing environmental monitoring including air quality, vibration levels, and noise levels
- For more information on this project element click here
Harrison Avenue Parking Structure
- Work on the inside of the Harrison Avenue Parking Structure is continuing
- Crews will be installing the elevators and HVAC throughout July
- Structure anticipated to be complete in October 2020
- Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No night work is anticipated.
- Temporary traffic control will remain in place at the work site to minimize interruptions
Substation Replacement/LIRR Crew Facilities
- In and around the existing LIRR Crew Facility, 3TC will continue work on relocating the facilities to 70-74 Willis Avenue and prepping the area for substation replacement
- In coordination with Village officials, screening will be installed and the permanent facility will be secured
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
