As summer arrives, Mineola Station has moved one step closer to major enhancements that will benefit commuters and the Village of Mineola for years to come. On Tuesday, May 26th, teams from 3rd Track Constructors began to implement phase one of the station reconstruction, which includes temporary platforms and walkways extending westward off of the existing platforms. These temporary platforms and walkways are now open to commuters, with the platforms maintaining a 12-car length.
Maintaining station access is especially important during this ongoing public health crisis. Essential health care workers from nearby NYU Winthrop Hospital have relied on the LIRR and Mineola Station – day and night – for the past several months, and can continue to do so throughout construction.
“This global pandemic has tested all of us, but none more so than the front line hospital staff who are tasked with duties that save lives every day,” said Justin Burke of NYU Winthrop. “Without fail, these brave women and men have reported to duty, at all hours, day and night, to provide care to those in need. Having access to reliable and safe public transportation is necessary for them to do their jobs, and we are pleased that the Mineola Station will remain open even as major improvements are underway.
Once complete, the Mineola Station Enhancement Project will feature a number of new amenities that not only will improve the experience for commuters but strengthen the reliability and resilience of LIRR infrastructure. While platform accessibility is maintained during this project, some required changes to the station are now in place. These temporary changes include new platform entry and exit points, new ticket machine locations, reduced parking, as well as waiting room and pedestrian overpass access.
