Mineola
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of June, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Mineola:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
Glen Cove Road Bridge Replacement Project
Full Closure of Glen Cove Road – June 26 – June 29
- Glen Cove Road is expected to close fully to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, from Old Country Road to Voice Road, on Friday, June 26 at 9:00pm until Monday, June 29 at 4:00am
- During this weekend, the existing Glen Cove Road bridge will be removed and the newly built, three-bay bridge structure will be rolled in, in a similar fashion to what was done at Nassau Boulevard and Cherry Lane
- At this time, a vehicular detour will be in place. Cars will be directed to Meadowbrook Parkway and commercial vehicles will be directed to Roslyn Road. Click here to view the detour maps.
- In anticipation of the replacement, crews will continue to build the new bridge structure in the Macy’s parking lot, just east of the existing bridge
- Following the bridge roll-in, work will continue on the bridge for approximately 6 weeks. At this time, lane closures may be necessary to facilitate the completion of work, and Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) signage will be in place to help pedestrians navigate the area.
- Leading up to the bridge replacement crews will also continue working on the east side of Glen Cove Road installing tie-backs and modifying the existing abutment
- As a result, the east sidewalk is closed and Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) signage is posted to assist pedestrians in navigating the area
- The eastern-most northbound lane is closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of this work
- The Glen Cove Road Bridge is one of seven bridges to be replaced or modified along the LIRR Main Line and will be built to support the new third track
Mineola Station Enhancement Project
- The Mineola Station Enhancement Project has begun. As a result, commuters will continue to access temporary platforms and walkways, extending westward off of the existing platforms
- The westbound platform is accessible west of the station building at the end of 3rd Avenue
- The eastbound platform is accessible from Station Road near the 4th and 5th Avenue corners
- The eastern pedestrian overpass near the station building is closed. The overpass at the Mineola Intermodal Center near 3rd Avenue will remain open.
- The west end pedestrian overpass, located near the parking garage, will remain open
- New Ticket Vending Machines are located near the eastbound platform entrances
- Parking spaces have been reduced in surface lots on the north and south sides of the station. 3TC is coordinating with the Village of Mineola and LIRR to help mitigate the loss where applicable.
- Click here to see the LIRR service change notification
- The Mineola Station Enhancement Project will include:
- New platforms to accommodate 12-car trains; platform canopies; new platform furnishings and amenities including leaning benches, shelters and signage
- New pedestrian overpasses including two new elevators
- CCTV security cameras to improve safety
- Wi-Fi; USB charging stations; digital information displays
- At-grade access to station platforms
- New bike racks and artwork
Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Preparatory work is continuing as construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) work to relocate both above and below ground utilities
- Willis Avenue, between Front Street to Old Country Road, is currently closed to southbound traffic to accommodate for utility relocation
- Access to the western portion of 3rd Street is closed at Willis Avenue. This portion of 3rd Street will be accessible to two-way local traffic only from Main Street.
- Teams will continue working on the relocation and installation of utilities along Front Street
- As a result, parking will be reduced in the 2nd Street parking lot
- 3TC is coordinating with the Village of Mineola to help mitigate the loss
- Utility relocation and installation is substantially complete along 2nd Street
- Intermittent closures of 2nd Street, between Willis Avenue and Main Street, may be necessary to complete the utility relocations in this area
- Residents may see crews from EJ Electric in the area of Willis Avenue working on the temporary relocation of utilities throughout the month of June
- National Grid is performing ongoing utility installation along Main Street on behalf of the Village of Mineola
- As a result, Main Street, between Front Street and 3rd Street, is currently closed to vehicular traffic
- Vehicles are encouraged to use alternate routes. Click here for detour map.
- This preparatory work is being done in anticipation of the closure of Willis Avenue
Wall Construction
- Sound wall installation has begun on the south side of the tracks from Roslyn Road, heading east toward Glen Cove Road
- Crews are installing metal caissons in sequence to provide the necessary support for the wall posts
- Residents along Albertson Place will see crews working along the right-of-way on this project element
- Heavy construction equipment, including excavators, boom trucks, pile drivers, cranes, front loaders, and more, are needed for this work
- Along the right-of-way, beginning at Herricks Road and heading east toward Mineola Station, the installation of sound and retaining walls on the north side of the tracks is ongoing
- Wall installation is nearing completion on the south side of the tracks along this stretch of the right-of-way
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- As part of the overall project, continued utility pole relocation work is taking place in several communities
- Crews from EJ Electric will work during the day and overnight setting permanent utility poles along the railroad right-of-way
- Once the poles are installed, crews will be able to safely relocate cables from temporary poles to the permanent poles
- Heavy construction equipment including vacuum trucks, cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work
- 3TC is contractually committed to performing ongoing environmental monitoring including air quality, vibration levels, and noise levels
Harrison Avenue Parking Structure
- Work on the inside of the Harrison Avenue Parking Structure is continuing
- Crews will be installing the elevators and HVAC throughout June
- Structure anticipated to be complete in July 2020
- Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No night work is anticipated.
- Temporary traffic control will remain in place at the work site to minimize interruptions
- While the parking lot, located between Harrison Avenue and 1st Street, remains closed, alternate locations for commuter parking, identified in cooperation with Village officials, are provided – click here for locations
Substation Replacement/LIRR Crew Facilities
- In and around the existing LIRR Crew Facility, 3TC will continue work on relocating the facilities to 70-74 Willis Avenue and prepping the area for substation replacement
- In coordination with Village officials, screening will be installed and the permanent facility will be secured
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; rail tie replacement; grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
