Teams from MTA Construction & Development, Long Island Rail Road and 3rd Track Constructors are laying the ground work needed to complete yet another massive piece of the LIRR Expansion Project at New Hyde Park Road in New Hyde Park
An incredible feat of engineering will take place on July 11 and 12 as existing tracks are demolished and 20 hydraulic jacks – with 5,000 tons of force – push a new 325-ton bridge and superstructure 50 feet into place. This will happen just 20 inches at a time as the engineers ensure its proper and precise installation.
New Hyde Park Road is one of eight LIRR grade crossings being eliminated, with Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park and Urban Avenue in New Cassel already completed. With the grade crossings gone, vehicular and pedestrian traffic will flow freely under the LIRR Mainline tracks decreasing vehicle exhaust, eliminating warning bells and train horn noise, improving the community’s quality of life and providing a more reliable train ride for customers. The new underpass is scheduled to be opened in early September.
