3rd Track Constructors (3TC) continues its progress on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, including the preparatory work required for the Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project, one of eight at-grade crossings to be eliminated as part of the project. While this project element has been underway since early spring, changes in the detour plan are required for the next phase of construction.
Beginning Thursday, May 21st, and continuing for approximately eight weeks, construction crews will begin sanitary utility relocations along Willis Avenue, between Front Street and Old Country Road.
During this activity, southbound traffic on Willis Avenue will be detoured. Access to the western portion of 3rd Street is closed at Willis Avenue. This portion of 3rd Street will be accessible to two-way local traffic only from Main Street. At times, Willis Avenue may experience additional intermittent closures to help facilitate the relocation of above and below ground utilities. Drivers traveling between Old Country Road and Jericho Turnpike should utilize Mineola Boulevard and Roslyn Road. Please refer to the detour maps below.
Featuring a two-way grade-separated underpass with an elevator and pedestrian bridge, the new Willis Avenue will provide a one-way service road on the west side of Willis Avenue and connect northbound Willis Avenue to eastbound Hinck Way. It will also connect the businesses between the LIRR Main Line and the LIRR Oyster Bay Branch. In addition, the intersection of Willis Avenue and 3rd Street will include a traffic signal to ensure safety.
