Garden City & Garden City Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of April, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Garden City and Garden City Park:
Completion dates are subject to change due to developments related to COVID-19
New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- The New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project has begun. The road is closed from Plaza Avenue to 4th Avenue until Labor Day
- Throughout the month of April, construction crews will continue excavating and lagging on the north side of the tracks for the installation of tie-backs
- On the south side of the tracks, crews will form, rebar and pour the base slab of the concrete U-structure
- Residents will see crews working both during the day and overnight on this crucial project element to meet the expedited construction schedule
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
- For the remainder of the closure, signage and detour plans are in place throughout the area Click here to see the vehicular detour map, and here to see the pedestrian detour map. To access the temporary NICE Bus route, please click here
- 3TC is continuing to coordinate with Village elected officials, Nassau County, New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), and the MTAPD to ensure efficiency of the closure
New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- The New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project has begun. Customers will continue to access a temporary 10-car platform, which runs along 2nd and 3rd Avenues, between South 12th Street and South 8th Street
- Throughout the coming weeks, crews from 3TC will install support of excavation (SOE), excavate, and begin to form, rebar and pour the platform piers for the south underpass ramps
- In the coming weeks, the platform at the station house is set to be demolished
- Residents will see crews working both on weekends and overnight to meet the expedited construction schedule for this crucial project element
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
- For the remainder of the work, signage and detours are in place to help customers access the station. Nassau 1 Interlocking
- The Nassau 1 Interlocking, where trains switch from track-to-track, is undergoing substantial improvements, which may require overnight and weekend work
- LIRR crews have successfully installed six switches at Nassau 1 Interlocking, which are needed for the new track
- LIRR forces will continue to relocate above and below ground communication and signal wires, power cables, and backbone conduit to configure the new switches with systems and signals
- During the overnight work, LIRR crews will be out in force and, to maintain their safety, lights, flag personnel, and other precautions will be deployed
Merillon Avenue Station Enhancement
- Canopy installation is ongoing and nearing completion. To facilitate this work. 3TC is utilizing small sections of existing green space, south of the eastbound platform along Main Avenue. This may require material and construction equipment to be placed outside of the existing green mesh construction fence
- Residents may see crews working in the area on weekends in the coming weeks
- Crews from EJ Electric are working on erecting permanent steel poles on the south side of the station
- For the duration of this work, flaggers will be in place to assist with the flow of two-way vehicular traffic on Main Avenue
- New ADA-compliant elevators are being installed at the Nassau Boulevard entrance
- Temporary pedestrian crosswalks have been installed along Main Avenue
- Please board and exit all trains (westbound and eastbound) from the first six (6) cars at Merillon Avenue Station
- Some parking spots will remain unavailable at Merillon Avenue; replacement parking is provided north of Merillon Avenue Station, along Broadway, between County Courthouse Road and Herricks Road, on the south side of the street
Permanent Utility Pole Installation
- As part of the overall project, continued utility pole relocation work is taking place in several communities over the coming months.
- Crews from EJ Electric will work during the day and overnight setting permanent wooden and steel utility poles along the railroad right-of-way from New Hyde Park Road to Tanners Pond Road, as well as Nassau Boulevard heading east to Herricks Road.
- Additionally, crews will continue the installation of steel poles in and around the Merillon Avenue Station
- Once the poles are installed, crews will be able to safely relocate cables from temporary poles to the permanent poles.
- Heavy construction equipment including vacuum trucks, cranes, bucket trucks, and more, are needed for this work.
- 3TC is contractually committed to performing ongoing environmental monitoring including air quality, vibration levels, and noise levels.
- This marks the final piece of utility work that began more than a year ago with the removal of the original poles, followed by the placement of temporary poles outside the railroad right-of-way. The new permanent poles will be mostly contained behind walls, and once completed, will offer a less intrusive and far more efficient layout of these public utilities.
Wall Construction
- 3TC construction teams are continuing the installation of retaining and sound attenuation walls in the Garden City community, from Nassau Boulevard to Herricks Road along the right-of-way on the north and south sides of the tracks:
- Crews continue to reinforce or install wall sections on top of the existing retaining wall, along the north side of the tracks. Once completed these sections will have a new security fence
- Sound wall installation on the south side of the tracks, from Kilburn Road to Kensington Road has begun and is progressing through the month of April
- On the south side of the tracks, along Main Avenue between Denton Avenue and Nassau Boulevard, sound wall installation is substantially complete
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
