The Merillon Avenue LIRR station is an example of the MTA’s extraordinary efforts to make the system more accessible and an illustration of its extensive coordination efforts with communities. Working closely with the Village of Garden City, the project team devised a creative solution unique to this station that makes if fully accessible and complements the neighborhood’s physical characteristics.
Something interesting to keep in mind as you read all about the ongoing progress: All of this work is being done while the station is kept open, by use of temporary platforms at the west end of the station. The old station platforms have been demolished, and new platforms are under construction.
The new ADA-compliant elevators, serving the north and south platforms, will be located at the far east end of the station.
By placing the elevators at the eastern end, the platforms will connect at street level to Nassau Boulevard, where passengers can utilize the sidewalk beneath the Nassau Boulevard Bridge, which connects the north and south side of the Main Line and was replaced last year.
This design, which will be complemented by MTA Arts & Design installations, will provide a fully-accessible station without the need for a new overpass or underpass.
More Customer-Focused Enhancements
Merillon Avenue station is undergoing additional enhancements that also were developed in coordination with the community, including platform removal and replacement to accommodate a new third track and 12-car trains; platform canopies; new platform furnishings and accouterments including benches, shelters and signage; CCTV security cameras to improve safety; free public Wi-Fi; USB charging stations and digital information displays.
