Mineola
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of March, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Mineola:
Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Preparatory work required for the Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project has begun
- Construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) will relocate both above and below ground utilities
- Installation and relocation of utilities along Willis Avenue is anticipated to begin in March
- Willis Avenue, between Front Street to Old Country Road will be closed to southbound traffic for approximately two weeks
- During this activity, 3rd Street, west of Willis Avenue will become a two-way road and will be inaccessible from Willis Avenue during this activity
- Following the completion of this activity, crews will mobilize to the opposite side of the street and northbound traffic will be detoured
- Front Street and 3rd Street, between Roslyn Road and Willis Avenue will become two-way streets, inaccessible from Willis Avenue
- Crews will continue to work on the installation and relocation of utilities along Front Street. This work is anticipated to be complete early this month
- As a result, Front Street on the south side of the tracks, between Willis Avenue and Main Avenue, will function as a two-way street, closed to thru-traffic
- Front Street will be inaccessible from Main Street, both north and south of the tracks, for the remainder of this work activity
- Utility relocation and installation will continue along 2nd Street
- Between Willis Avenue and Main Street, 2nd Street will be closed to thru-traffic and will be restricted to east bound traffic only. Traffic looking to utilize this portion of 2nd Street westbound, will be directed to use 1st Street, one block north
- In addition to our work, National Grid will be out along 3rd Street, between Main Street and Willis Avenue, beginning March 23rd
- Concurrently, the Village of Mineola is conducting their own utility operation along Main Street, which may affect vehicular traffic throughout the area
- If at all possible, vehicular traffic should avoid the area and utilize alternate routes. Click here for detour map.
- This preparatory work is being done in anticipation of the closure of Willis Avenue in Spring 2020
Harrison Avenue Parking Structure
- Work on the inside of the Harrison Avenue Parking Structure is continuing
- Installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; installation of the steel framing for the elevators; glass installation and glazing
- Structure anticipated to be complete in Summer 2020
- Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No night work is anticipated
- Temporary traffic control will remain in place at the work site to minimize interruptions
- While the parking lot, located between Harrison Avenue and 1st Street, remains closed, alternate locations for commuter parking, identified in cooperation with Village officials, are provided – click here for locations
Substation Replacement/LIRR Crew Facilities
- In and around the existing LIRR Crew Facility, 3TC will continue work on relocating the facilities to 70-74 Willis Avenue and prepping the area for substation replacement
- In coordination with Village officials, screening will be installed and the permanent facility will be secured
Glen Cove Road Bridge REPLACEMENT project
- Work on the Glen Cove Road Bridge Modification Project has begun and will continue into Summer 2020
- Throughout the month of March, construction crews will install tie-backs and excavate to build the west abutments.
- As a result, the west side sidewalk will be closed, and one southbound lane will be closed to traffic until Spring 2020
- The Glen Cove Road Bridge Modification Project is one of seven bridges to be modified along the LIRR Main Line. The new bridge will provide sufficient clearance for trucks to safely pass underneath it, and will be built to support the new third track of the main line
Wall Construction
- Along the right-of-way, beginning at Herricks Road and heading east toward Mineola Station, the installation of sound and retaining walls on the north side of the tracks is ongoing through the month of March
- Residents may see crews working during the weekends to complete this work
- From Herricks Road to Mineola Station on the south side of the tracks, wall construction is substantially complete
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
