Mineola
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of February, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Mineola:
Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Preparatory work required for the Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project has begun
- Construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) will relocate both above and below ground utilities
- Work on the relocation and installation of water utilities along Willis Avenue, between Front Street and 3rd Street, is expected to begin this month
- As a result, Front Street between Willis Avenue and Main Street will be closed to thru-traffic during day-shift hours for approximately two weeks
- Additionally, 2nd Street between Willis Avenue and Main Street will be closed to thru-traffic during day-shift hours for approximately three weeks
- This preparatory work is being done in anticipation of the closure of Willis Avenue in Spring 2020
Harrison Avenue Parking Structure
- The precast shell of the Harrison Avenue Parking Structure is complete, with work continuing, including:
- Installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; installation of the steel framing for the elevators; glass installation and glazing
- Structure anticipated to be complete in Summer 2020
- Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No night work is anticipated
- Temporary traffic control will remain in place at the work site to minimize interruptions
- While the parking lot, located between Harrison Avenue and 1st Street, remains closed, alternate locations for commuter parking, identified in cooperation with Village officials, are provided – click here for locations
Substation Replacement/LIRR Crew Facilities
- In and around the existing LIRR Crew Facility, 3TC will continue work on relocating the facilities to 70-74 Willis Avenue, and prepping the area for substation replacement
- In coordination with Village officials, screening will be installed and the permanent facility will be secured
Glen Cove Road Bridge REPLACEMENT project
- Work on the Glen Cove Road Bridge Modification Project has begun and will continue into Summer 2020
- Throughout the month of February, construction crews will install support of excavation (SOE), tie-backs, and excavate to build the west abutments.
- As a result, the west side sidewalk will be closed, and one southbound lane will be closed to traffic until early Spring 2020
- The Glen Cove Road Bridge Modification Project is one of seven bridges to be modified along the LIRR Main Line. The new bridge will provide sufficient clearance for trucks to safely pass underneath it, and will be built to support the new third track of the main line
Wall Construction
- Along the right-of-way, beginning at Herricks Road and heading east toward Mineola Station, sections of soldier piles are being installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Soldier piles are installed by vibratory hammers to provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall and sound wall
- Various machinery will be working along the right-of-way
- Throughout the month of February, crews will continue to prep the area, both east and west of Roslyn Road, on the south side of the tracks. Following the removal of vegetation, crews will begin the installation of SOE along the right-of-way.
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
