Following the successful completion of grade crossing eliminations at Urban Avenue in New Cassel and Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park, the LIRR Expansion Project team is gearing up for its third grade crossing elimination, at New Hyde Park Road. The project will begin on February 3, 2020, when the New Hyde Park train station will close for reconstruction. The New Hyde Park Road grade crossing (from 4th Avenue to Plaza Avenue) will fully close to traffic on February 3rd to make way for construction of the new five-lane underpass, with pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides. A temporary traffic detour plan has been developed and shared with communities, commuters and local businesses.

New Station Being Built!
A temporary station with 10-car platforms situated immediately west of the existing New Hyde Park station will continue to serve LIRR customers. The New Hyde Park Station and underpass will be completed simultaneously, with the temporary station available to LIRR customers beginning February 3rd. Simultaneous timing of the station and grade crossing work will shorten the construction period and allow easier pedestrian passage from points east in Garden City to the temporary station. In advance of the upcoming work, the project team has expanded its outreach to engage a broader audience through increased social media usage, website notices, advertisements and in-person meetings. To date, project team members have hosted several public meetings to inform residents as to the work set to take place.

Travis Brennan, Director of Communications for design-build contractor 3rd Track Constructors (3TC), and members of the MTA/LIRR Project Management Team joined the Village of New Hyde Park Board of Trustees on December 19th to brief Village residents on what to expect throughout the upcoming construction. On January 9th, project team members attended a meeting with the Garden City Traffic Commission to explain the operations and to field questions; on January 15th, Travis and team members met with the Lakeville Estates Civic Association to discuss upcoming activities at New Hyde Park Road. New Hyde Park Community Ambassador Judy White and Garden City Community Ambassador Jim Green have been canvassing local neighborhoods to keep residents up to date about the construction schedule. The LIRR Expansion Project is thankful to the Village officials and community members who have helped us spread the word.
