New Hyde Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of December, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Hyde Park:
New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- The New Hyde Park Road grade crossing in New Hyde Park and Garden City is one of eight street-level crossings to be eliminated as part of the project
- Designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and the Village of Garden City, this reconstructed grade crossing will enhance safety and provide for a quieter, more livable community along the railroad
- The at-grade crossing is being reconstructed to feature a new, five-lane underpass with pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides of the underpass, as well as a dedicated left-turn lane from southbound New Hyde Park Road to Clinch Avenue
- Plaza Avenue, between Herkomer Street and New Hyde Park Road, will be realigned and become a two-way street, to improve traffic flow associated with the new signal being installed at New Hyde Park Road and Plaza Avenue
New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project
- The New Hyde Park Station Enhancement Project will include significant enhancements, developed through input and support received from the local community. Some features include:
- New platforms to accommodate 12-car trains; platform canopies; new platform furnishings and accoutrements including benches, shelters and signage
- CCTV security cameras to improve safety
- ADA-compliant mobility improvements including ramps
- Wi-Fi; USB charging stations; and digital information displays
- Throughout December, crews will continue to construct temporary station platforms, between South 12th Street and Covert Avenue, which are expected to open for service in early January
- The temporary platforms will accommodate 10-car trains
- During construction, 20 commuter parking spaces will be temporarily unavailable for use
- To support the construction of the new permanent platforms, 3TC crews will continue utility installation and relocation on the north and south side of the tracks
115 New Hyde Park Road – Utility Relocation & Installation
- In the area of the demolished building at 115 New Hyde Park Road, crews from 3rd Track Constructors continue to work to install a new sanitary line and storm water retention system
-
-
- 2nd Avenue, between Herkomer Street and New Hyde Park Road, is closed until Summer 2020
- 3TC is providing 1-for-1 parking replacement at 115 New Hyde Park Road, for the on-street parking spaces impacted by this activity
- Please click here to see the detour map for information on how to access the parking lot and how to navigate around the road closure
-
Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- As of November 22, 2nd and 3rd Avenues have been paved and open to through traffic, signifying substantial completion of this crucial project element. Click here to watch a video from the weekend of the bridge push
Wall Construction
- On the south side, from 6th Avenue, heading east to Covert Avenue, construction crews will continue to install retaining and sound attenuation walls along the right-of-way
- Sound attenuation walls help to reduce ambient noise levels and retaining walls are being used so as to minimize the need for property acquisition
- The precast retaining and sound attenuation wall panels will be delivered by truck
- You will see approximately 10 – 12 trucks per day delivering material to the area. Not all trucks will be on the same street on the same day
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
