Mineola
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of December, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Mineola:
Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Preparatory work required for the Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project has begun
- Construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) will relocate both above and below ground utilities
- At times, traffic along Willis Ave may be limited to a single lane
- If necessary, the construction team will provide cones, flagmen, and signage to minimize disruption to the community
- Work will extend along Willis Avenue, from 2nd Street to Front Street
- Major work for the Project is expected to begin May 2020
Harrison Avenue Parking Structure
- The precast shell of the Harrison Avenue Parking Structure is complete, with foundation work continuing, including:
- Installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; and installation of the steel framing for the elevators
- Glass installation and glazing
- Structure anticipated to be complete in Spring 2020
- Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No night work is anticipated
- Temporary traffic control will remain in place at the work site to minimize interruptions
- In coordination with Village officials, 3TC will utilize the DPW yard off of 2nd Street
- While the parking lot, located between Harrison Avenue and 1st Street, remains closed, alternate locations for commuter parking, identified in cooperation with Village officials, are provided – click here for locations
Mineola Station Enhancement
- Preparatory work on the Mineola Station Enhancement Project is expected to begin in Spring 2020
Substation Replacement/LIRR Crew Facilities
- In and around the existing LIRR Crew Facility across from 70-74 Willis Avenue, 3TC will continue to modernize and consolidate the existing crew facilities
- In coordination with Village officials, screening will be installed and the permanent facility will be secured
Wall Construction
- Along the right-of-way, beginning at Herricks Road and heading east toward Mineola Station, sections of soldier piles are being installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Soldier piles are installed by vibratory hammers to provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall and sound wall
- Various machinery will be working along the right-of-way
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
