During the morning, rush-hour commute on November 7, a vehicle struck and damaged a crossing gate at the South 12th Street at-grade crossing near New Hyde Park, causing traffic congestion and LIRR commuters to experience delays. MTA-LIRR crews were deployed quickly to repair the damage and service was back on schedule within the hour.
In 2020, the South 12th Street at-grade crossing will be eliminated – enhancing safety, eliminating delays and providing for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
The South 12th Street Grade Crossing Elimination Project is one of eight street-level crossings along the project route to be eliminated. By eliminating these street-level crossings, the LIRR Expansion team is strengthening the reliability of the LIRR infrastructure, and supporting the growth and development of Long Island, all while keeping neighboring communities safe.
