New Cassel
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of November, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in New Cassel:
School Street Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Preparatory work required for the School Street Grade Crossing Elimination Project, one of eight at-grade crossings to be eliminated as part of the Project, has begun
- Construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) will relocate the above and below ground utilities
- Union Avenue, between Post Avenue and Linden Avenue will close for overnight utility relocations from 7:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Monday, November 4, through Friday, November 8 Click here for LIRR service update
- Nine parking spaces on the easternmost section of the Westbury LIRR Station parking lot will be utilized by 3TC crews to perform work until Saturday, November 9 at approximately 5:00 a.m.
- The free shuttle buses will remain in operation from Westbury Station to Source Mall
- National Grid will close one lane on the east side of School Street as well as the northeastern side of Railroad Avenue for the installation of gas mains, during the week of November 11. This lane closure will be a daytime-only activity
- Sanitary installation along School Street is expected to begin on Monday, November 18, lasting approximately two months
- The installation will occur on School Street, south of Railroad Avenue to Lowell Avenue
- There will be a single lane closure on School Street, allowing for northbound traffic only
Wall Construction
- Along the right-of-way on the south side of the tracks, from Grand Boulevard to the Wantagh State Parkway, wall construction is nearing completion
- Along the right-of-way on the north side of the tracks, from Grand Boulevard to the Wantagh State Parkway, crews continue to install SOE and perform wall construction
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration monitoring devices are deployed
Urban Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- The Urban Avenue at-grade crossing has been eliminated and the roadway is reopened; however, construction crews remain in the area performing finish work
- Broadway and Railroad Avenue, between Kinkel and Rushmore Streets, are being repaved; all streets are expected to be reopened to through traffic before November 30
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
