Garden City & Garden City Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of November, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Garden City and Garden City Park:
Nassau Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project
Replacement of the Nassau Boulevard Bridge is largely complete, significantly reducing the impact on drivers, commuters, and nearby residents. To see an engineering marvel in action, click here to watch a video of the bridge replacement.
- Intermittent lane and sidewalk closures of Nassau Boulevard may be required as construction crews perform finish work, including reinforcing newly installed abutment tie-backs
- The west sidewalk under the Nassau Boulevard Bridge is closed until January 2020. Temporary stop-signs have been placed on both the north and south sides of the right-of-way to protect pedestrian and vehicular traffic during the sidewalk closure
Merillon Avenue Station Enhancement
- The western halves of the Merillon Avenue Station platforms (north and south sides) have been rebuilt and reopened. Temporary platforms have been installed to accommodate six-car station access
- Construction crews will continue to excavate the area and set pre-cast footings and rebar, and pour piers, and then build the permanent platform
- New ADA-compliant elevators are being installed at the Nassau Boulevard entrance. As a result, the west sidewalk under the Nassau Boulevard Bridge will be closed until January 2020
- Temporary pedestrian crosswalks have been installed along Main Avenue
- Please board and exit all trains (westbound and eastbound) from the first six (6) cars at Merillon Avenue Station
- Once this project element is completed, the new platforms will accommodate longer 12-car trains,
- Some parking spots will remain unavailable at Merillon Avenue; replacement parking is provided north of Merillon Avenue Station, along Broadway, between County Courthouse Road and Herricks Road, on the south side of the street
Nassau 1 Interlocking
- The project includes substantial improvements to the Nassau 1 Interlocking, where trains switch from track-to-track at junctions or crossings. These improvements will include overnight and weekend work and may include:
-
- LIRR crews working along the right-of-way to elevate the track bed to meet the new height that will come with the new Nassau Boulevard Bridge
- LIRR work trains will deliver ballast; LIRR work trains and crews will tamp down the delivered ballast
- During the overnight work, LIRR crews will be out in force and to maintain their safety, lights, flag personnel, and other precautions will be deployed
- To support construction of the new switches, Main Avenue, between Brixton Road and Kensington Road, will be closed to through traffic
- A barrier will be placed in the road to protect the work site, limiting the road to one-lane throughout the month of November
-
Tanners Pond Road /Denton Avenue Bridge Replacement Project,
- Construction teams from 3TC, National Grid, PSEG Long Island, Verizon, Altice, and Light Tower (or their respective contractors) will begin early work to relocate both above and below ground utilities
- At times, Denton Avenue may close to allow crews to perform their work safely
- Signage will direct vehicular traffic and a detour will be in place and communicated in advance of any required road closure
- Major work for the Tanners Pond Road / Denton Avenue Bridge Replacement Project is not expected to begin until late 2020
New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- The New Hyde Park Road grade crossing in New Hyde Park and Garden City is one of eight street-level crossings to be eliminated as part of the project
- The at-grade crossing is being reconstructed to feature a new, five-lane underpass with pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides of the underpass, as well as a dedicated left-turn lane from southbound New Hyde Park Road to Clinch Avenue
- Plaza Avenue, between Herkomer Street and New Hyde Park Road, will be realigned and become a two-way street, to improve traffic flow associated with the new signal being installed at New Hyde Park Road and Plaza Avenue
- This reconstructed grade crossing was designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and the Village of Garden City. It will enhance safety and provide for a quieter, more livable community along the railroad
- During the month of November, crews are continuing to perform work, including
- Soldier piles are being installed by vibratory hammers to form the wall for earth support required for excavation
- For approximately two weeks in November, New Hyde Park Road will be limited to two lanes
- The south bound lanes will be reconfigured to allow for two-way directional traffic at all times during this closure
- Vehicles will not be permitted to turn left on to Plaza Avenue when heading southbound during this temporary closure
- Pedestrians traveling from Garden City will continue to access New Hyde Park Station via the temporary walkway along Greenridge Avenue. Pedestrians will be restricted from crossing the tracks on the east side of New Hyde Park Road
- In coordination with NICE Bus, the stops for southbound passengers will move north, closer to South Park Place
- For approximately two weeks in November, New Hyde Park Road will be limited to two lanes
- Soldier piles are being installed by vibratory hammers to form the wall for earth support required for excavation
- As a result of feedback from emergency service personnel and elected officials in New Hyde Park and Garden City/Garden City Park, traffic along New Hyde Park Road, south of the tracks, has been modified. Signage is in place in and around the intersection to ensure driver and pedestrian safety
Wall Construction
- As part of 3TC’s commitment to the community, the installation of retaining and sound walls will improve the quality of life for residents living near and around the LIRR tracks
- Significant progress has been made by the 3TC construction team on the installation of retaining and sound walls in the Garden City community, from New Hyde Park Road to Herricks Road along the right-of-way on the north and south sides of the tracks:
- Crews will finish the installation of a sound wall parallel to the retaining wall from Nassau Boulevard to Herricks Road
- Crews will continue to reinforce or install wall sections, on top of the existing retaining wall, along the north side of the tracks. Once completed these sections will have a new security fence
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
