Floral Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of November, you will see crews performing the following construction activities in Floral Park:
Floral Park Station Enhancement Project
- Crews will begin excavating the foundations for Floral Park Station’s new elevators
- This project element is expected to be complete in May 2020
- Elevators will be ADA-compliant and will provide easier access to the platforms on both sides of the station
- To allow for this station enhancement, some on-street parking spaces have been temporarily eliminated
- Along Atlantic Avenue between Carlton Avenue and Vernon Avenue as well as underneath the station viaduct. Approximately 25 parking spaces will be removed from service for the duration of the elevator installation work
- Replacement parking is provided at 50 Carnation Avenue, and signage is present
Linden Avenue Pedestrian Underpass
- Substantial construction on the modified underpass anticipated to begin on November 14
- Crews will utilize the western-most ballfield (The Pit) and the Village of Floral Park DPW yard for staging and accessing the LIRR right-of-way
- The Floral Park Recreation Center remains accessible through other egress points
- The new Linden Avenue Pedestrian Underpass is expected to be opened in March 2020
Plainview Avenue Bridge Modification Project
- Early work on the Plainfield Avenue Bridge Modification Project has begun
- To accommodate the new third track, the abutments will be widened and reinforced. The additional bay will be built on the south side of the tracks
- During a majority of construction, one sidewalk is expected to remain open and two-way traffic maintained
- In February 2020, Plainfield Avenue is expected to be closed entirely to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for approximately five days, as the new bay
Wall Construction
- From Plainfield Avenue to Lewis Avenue on the north side, 3TC will install retaining and sound
attenuation walls along the right-of-way- Residents along Charles Street will see crews clearing vegetation to prepare the area for
wall installation - Following the removal of the vegetation, construction crews will begin driving piles to
provide the support necessary for the excavation. H-Piles will be installed by vibratory
hammers in sequence to form a wall for earth support - Once the piles are installed, crews will begin wall installation
- Sound attenuation walls help to reduce ambient noise levels and retaining walls are being used so as to minimize the need for property acquisition
- The precast wall panels will be delivered by truck
- You will see approximately 10–12 trucks per day delivering material to the area.
However, not all trucks will be on the same street on the same day
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and
vibration are continuously monitored
- Residents along Charles Street will see crews clearing vegetation to prepare the area for
Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
