The LIRR Expansion Project, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, continues in earnest throughout communities along the nearly ten-mile stretch of mainline track from Floral Park to Hicksville. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team phases in specific project elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
One of the next significant project elements, the Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project, will begin in the coming months. Featuring a two-way grade-separated underpass with an elevator and pedestrian bridge, the new Willis Avenue will provide a one-way service road on the west side of Willis Avenue and connect northbound Willis Avenue to eastbound Hinck Way. It will also connect the businesses between the LIRR Main Line and the LIRR Oyster Bay Branch. The new underpass will extend south to maintain traffic on Front Street westbound across Willis Avenue. In addition, the intersection of Willis Avenue and Third Street will include a traffic signal to ensure safety.
Beginning Monday, October 14, construction crews from 3TC will begin preparatory work required for the grade crossing elimination.
While heavy equipment isn’t typically required for the preparatory work, given what we’ve heard from our Community Ambassadors serving other communities, the project team wanted to provide all those that may be impacted or see the ongoing work with the most accurate information possible.
The goal is to complete the work in as short a time frame as possible while maintaining safe and reliable operations.
