Keeping the community informed is as essential as moving bridges.
On September 18, the LIRR Expansion Project Team met with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Morrison and the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park UFSD for a project coordination meeting. The Expansion Project team joined school leadership and staff at the New Hyde Park Road School to raise awareness of current and upcoming construction activities near the school, specifically the schedule for the opening of the new Covert Avenue underpass and planned work on the New Hyde Park Road grade crossing elimination and associated traffic detour plans. Other attendees included Assistant Superintendent Michael Frank, Board President Patricia Rudd, New Hyde Park Road School Principal Kim LaRegina, transportation and school staff and several officers from the Nassau County Police Department.
The Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination will reduce safety risks to drivers, pedestrians and LIRR customers, contributed to noise and air pollution and caused lengthy commutes for both drivers and LIRR customers: as trains approach the station in New Hyde Park, grade crossing gates are down 32 to 42 percent of the time in the AM and PM peak hour periods. For more information, and photos of ongoing construction, please visit the Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination project page on AModernLI.com.
The New Hyde Park grade crossing is being reconstructed to feature a new five-lane underpass with pedestrian sidewalks on the east and west sides of the underpass. There will also be a dedicated left-turn lane from southbound New Hyde Park Road to Clinch Avenue.
