Mineola
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation infrastructure projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing in specific project elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of October, you will see crews continuing construction activities in Mineola. By way of explanation:
Harrison Avenue Parking Structure
- Substantial completion of the precast shell of the Harrison Avenue Parking Structure is expected
- Crews continue to work Monday through Saturday, from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No night work is anticipated
- Temporary traffic control will remain in place at the work site to minimize interruptions
- In coordination with Village officials, 3TC will utilize the DPW yard off of 2nd Street, for the delivery of the more than 600 pre-cast sections of the garage, each weighing 20 tons, that are being delivered from Pennsylvania
- While the parking lot, located between Harrison Avenue and 1st Street, remains closed, alternate locations for commuter parking, identified in cooperation with Village officials, are provided – click here for locations
Willis Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Featuring a two-way grade-separated underpass with an elevator and pedestrian bridge, the new Willis Avenue will provide a one-way service road on the west side of Willis Avenue and connect northbound Willis Avenue to eastbound Hinck Way
- The new Willis Avenue will also connect the businesses between the LIRR Main Line and the LIRR Oyster Bay Branch
- Extending south to maintain traffic on Front Street westbound across Willis Avenue, the new underpass will also add a traffic signal to ensure safety at the intersection with Third Street
- Beginning Monday, October 14, construction crews from 3TC will begin preparatory work required for the grade crossing elimination
- While heavy equipment isn’t typically required for the preparatory work, constituents will see crews in the area and work beginning
Substation Replacement/LIRR Crew Facilities
- In and around the existing LIRR Crew Facility adjacent to 70-74 Willis Avenue, 3TC will begin to work to modernize and consolidate the existing crew facilities
- In coordination with Village officials, screening will be installed and the jobsite will be secured
Wall Construction
- Along the right-of-way, beginning at Herricks Road and heading east, sections of soldier piles will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Soldier piles are installed by vibratory hammers to provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall and sound wall
- Various machinery will be working along the right-of-way
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- We recognize that these activities may be disruptive and we remain committed to seeing the work completed in as short of a time frame as possible, all while maintaining safe and reliable operations
