There’s a first time for everything…and as of Thursday, Sept. 6, pedestrians and drivers are able to, for the first time, safely pass underneath the LIRR tracks on Urban Avenue.
At a ribbon-cutting event, local elected officials joined leadership from the MTA and LIRR to celebrate the reopening of Urban Avenue, which had been closed from Broadway to Main Street since the construction team began working on this project element six months ago.
With the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department leading the way, a procession of vehicles, including a Westbury Fire Department truck, ceremoniously passed though the new underpass signifying the successful completion of the Urban Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project.
The Urban Avenue grade crossing was reconstructed to accommodate the two-way grade separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the west side. This is the first of eight grade crossings to be completed as part of the LIRR Expansion Project.
