New Cassel
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation infrastructure projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing in specific project elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
The first of eight grade crossings to be eliminated as part of the LIRR Expansion Project will be completed in the month of September. Following six months of work, Urban Avenue will fully reopen to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, safely reconnecting the north side of New Cassel to south side and providing for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
In the Community for National Night Out
- On Tuesday, August 6, 3TC’s Community Ambassador for New Cassel, Seth Sylvan, along with Dan Marcy, a member of the MTA-LIRR project management team, celebrated National Night Out at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in New Cassel
During the month of September, you will see crews continuing construction activities in New Cassel. By way of explanation:
Urban Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project – Roadway Reopens on September 6
- Work continues at the site of the rolled-in bridge, ahead of the planned reopening of Urban Avenue on September 6, including:
- Regrading the roadway to meet the new grade of the underpass
- Repaving and restriping the roadway
- Installing new sidewalks
- Restoring and connecting driveway aprons
- During the restoration work, Broadway, between Kinkel Street and Rushmore Street, is closed
- Until the roadway reopens, Urban Avenue, from Broadway to Main Street, remains closed. To accommodate the full closure of Urban Avenue, a detour plan was designed to navigate around the closure as easy as possible
- A free pedestrian shuttle service is provided, until the roadway reopens, from the corner of Broadway and Urban Avenue (north of the tracks) to Main Street and Urban Avenue (south of the tracks). The shuttle is planned to run seven days a week, every half hour from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and will cease operating when the roadway reopens
Urban Avenue to School Street Wall Construction
- In September, the following wall activities will continue:
- Precast wall panels will be installed on the south side of the right-of-way
- The pile line will be surveyed to ensure stability
- Drilled shafts for support will be installed from Grand Boulevard to Urban Avenue on the north side. Drilled shafts will also be installed along the south side
- Additionally, crews will prepare to remove stumps and clear vegetation from Grand Boulevard to Urban Avenue on the north side of the right-of-way
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration monitoring devices are deployed
- To accommodate this work, fuel and concrete trucks will make deliveries along the right-of-way
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- We recognize that these activities may be disruptive and we remain committed to seeing the work completed in as short of a time frame as possible, all while maintaining safe and reliable operations
