Floral Park
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation infrastructure projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing in specific project elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
South Tyson Avenue Bridge Modification – COMPLETE
- In August, over just one weekend, the new, two-track South Tyson Avenue bay bridge was successfully rolled into place – Visit Building Bridges and Making History at South Tyson Avenue Bridge to watch a time-lapse video of the roll-in
- The completion of this project element will serve to reduce the Main Line bottleneck and set the stage for a future increase in capacity on the Main Line
- While South Tyson Avenue has reopened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, the 18 “interior” parking spaces, under the viaduct, remain unavailable for use, as crews perform finishing work on the area under the bridge
- Temporary alternate parking, with lighting, is available at 50 Carnation Avenue, with the entrance off of Lily Street
During the month of September, you will see crews continuing construction activities in Floral Park. By way of explanation:
Floral Park Station Elevators
- Phase 1 of the elevator installation portion Floral Park Station Enhancement Project, which began last month, continues
- Elevators will be ADA-compliant and will provide easier access to the platforms on both sides of the station
- Phase 1 of this three phase activity is expected to last three weeks – the detour plan previously announced is in effect
- The elevator installation work is not expected to have any impact on access to Floral Park Station
- However, along Atlantic Avenue, between Carnation Avenue and Vernon Avenue, 30 parking spaces will be removed from service for the duration of the elevator installation work, approximately seven months
- Replacement parking is provided across the street from Harrison’s (86 South Tyson Avenue) on the northeast side of South Tyson Avenue
- Signage will present, notating the location of the replacement parking
Wall Construction
- The majority of the retaining walls along Terrace Avenue, just east of Plainfield Avenue, have been installed
- Crews are continuing to install a sound wall on top of the recently constructed retaining wall, with completion anticipated early September
- The westernmost section of the wall, adjacent to Plainfield Avenue, will not be complete until the Plainfield Avenue Bridge Modification Project is completed
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Linden Avenue Pedestrian Underpass
- The Linden Avenue Pedestrian Underpass will be demolished temporarily and rebuilt
- Construction crews are installing tiebacks and soldier piles, which are installed by vibratory hammers to provide the support necessary for the reconstruction of the underpass
- Sections of soldier piles are installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Crews will utilize western-most ballfield (The Pit) and the Village of Floral Park DPW yard for staging and accessing the LIRR right-of-way
- The Floral Park Recreation Center will remain accessible through other egress points
Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- We recognize that these activities may be disruptive and we remain committed to seeing the work completed in as short of a time frame as possible, all while maintaining safe and reliable operations
