Carle Place
Significant progress has been made on the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most noteworthy transportation infrastructure projects. While the duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction, the 3rd Track Constructors team is phasing in specific project elements to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of September, you will see crews continuing construction activities in Carle Place. By way of explanation:
Carle Place Station Enhancement Project
- Progress is being made on this project element, with platform piers taking shape and the permanent platform on the southwest side of the station nearly complete
- Both staircases at Cherry Lane have reopened
- To access Carle Place Station, please use:
- Stonehinge Lane to access the westbound platform
- Garden Avenue to access the eastbound platform
- Staircases at Cherry Lane for westbound and eastbound platforms
- Access to the station via Carle Road, both the north and south side of the tracks, is closed
- To board/exit trains at Carle Place Station, please be prepared to board and exit all trains (westbound and eastbound) from the first six (6) cars
- While crews will access the right-of-way via Garden Avenue, using 15-feet of Charles J. Fuschillo Park, the park will remain open and the construction work will not impact its availability. Foam padding was installed along the 3TC construction fence facing the field
Wall Construction
- Excavation and installation of the sound and retaining walls on the south side of Cherry Lane to Meadowbrook Road continues
- Along the right-of-way, sections of sheet piles, recycled steel with interlocking edges, will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Installed by vibratory hammers, sheet piles provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall
- Beginning on or about September 9, 3TC will close Atlantic Avenue (north side of the tracks) to through traffic, from Meadowbrook Parkway to Cherry Lane, restricting access to residents only
- The road will be narrowed by a barrier that will be placed down the middle of Atlantic Avenue, which will separate the work zone from residential traffic, ensuring the safety of residents and the work crews
- At the base of the embankment along Atlantic Avenue, crews will clear vegetation, including the removal of some trees and associated stump grinding, to prepare the work area for the future sound and retaining wall. This work will take approximately six months. It is important to note that 3TC will replace some of the vegetation that was cleared upon completion of the walls being installed
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration monitoring devices are deployed
- Along the right-of-way, sections of sheet piles, recycled steel with interlocking edges, will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition and complementary to 3TC’s activities, you may see or hear LIRR forces working along the railroad right-of-way. These activities may include:
- Regular track inspection and maintenance; Rail tie replacement; Grade crossing elimination preparatory work
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- We recognize that these activities may be disruptive and we remain committed to seeing the work completed in as short of a time frame as possible, all while maintaining safe and reliable operations
