Over the weekend, construction crews successfully installed a newly constructed bridge and underpass tunnel at the Covert Avenue grade crossing in the Village of New Hyde Park. The elimination and replacement of the grade crossing marks yet another major milestone achieved by 3rd Track Constructors and MTA-LIRR crews, as part of the LIRR Expansion Project.
The work over the weekend on the Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination project resulted in the fourth bridge to be installed this summer. And thanks to the efficiency of the workers involved with the “push” of the new bridge and their strict adherence to the schedule, LIRR service was restored in time for Monday’s rush-hour commute.
The new bridge and tunnel structure was built by construction crews over the last several months. Following additional work in and around the area, when Covert Avenue reopens, there will be a two-lane, grade-separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the underpass. The reconstructed grade crossing was designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park, will enhance safety, and will provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
