New Hyde Park
The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, is now underway throughout the communities along a nearly ten mile stretch of mainline track.
The duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction. The project elements are phased to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of July, you will see construction crews performing work in New Hyde Park, including surveying, testing, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. By way of explanation:
Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- After nearly two months of work, the 3TC construction team and its subcontractors, continue to make significant progress eliminating the at-grade crossing along Covert Avenue. Since closing this portion of Covert Avenue on April 15, the team has:
- Installed 14 pipe piles, 12,000 square feet of wood lagging, and 270 linear feet of steel sheet pile
- Excavated 11,000 cubic yards of soil
- During the month of July, construction crews will work on the north side of the project:
- Pouring base slabs and pouring U-structure railroad abutments, which will serve as support for the additional rail road track
- Install rebar and form structures for support
- Installing cathodic protection to control the corrosion of metal surfaces
- On the south side of the project, crews will begin pouring base slabs and abutments on 3rd Avenue
- Work this month will also include LIRR Track raising for both Track 1 and Track 2 at Covert Avenue (including the potential need for overnight and weekend work)
- The detour plan, designed following extensive traffic impact studies and with input from local officials, remains in place so that navigating around the closure is as easy as possible. Click here to see the detour map
- At the intersection of 4th Avenue and New Hyde Park Road, 3TC is coordinating with the Village to implement “Do Not Block the Box” striping to aid in traffic management
- Businesses along Covert Avenue will remain accessible throughout construction
115 New Hyde Park Road
- In the area of the demolished building at 115 New Hyde Park Road, crews from 3rd Track Constructors and its subcontractors, will install a new sanitary line; and laying an eight inch, reinforced concrete slab to prepare for the installation of a storm water retention system
- Following the preparatory work, crews will install the storm water retention system
- 3TC will provide a one-for-one replacement, inside the footprint of 115 New Hyde Park Road, for any on street parking impacted by this activity
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, LIRR forces will be working along the railroad right-of-way
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, all LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way will take place overnight
- These activities are ongoing across the Main Line corridor, and may include: regular track inspection & maintenance, rail tie replacement, and grade crossing elimination
