Floral Park
The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, is now underway throughout the communities along a nearly ten mile stretch of mainline track.
The duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction. The project elements are phased to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of July, you will see crews continuing heavy construction activities in Floral Park, along with crews performing surveys, testing, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. By way of explanation:
South Tyson Avenue Bridge Project
- The 3TC construction team continues to make progress on this element of the LIRR Expansion Project – with 70 percent complete through the end of June
- Phase 3 of 4 of this project element – on the east side of South Tyson Avenue – continues, with construction crews:
- Installing rebar and pouring concrete for the bridge foundation
- Installing rebar and pouring concrete for the wall along Tyson Avenue
- Waterproofing and backfilling the east abutment and viaduct with earth
- Backfilling along the retaining wall of the viaduct around areas where piles were previously driven
- Beginning to erect the steel structure
- Conducting preparatory work along the Hempstead Branch, including ballast retainer removal
- Weekend or overnight work may be required for this phase of the project
- The 18 “interior” parking spaces and the six parking spaces along the east side of the street, under the viaduct, remain unavailable for use
- Temporary alternate parking, with lighting, is available at 50 Carnation Avenue, with entrance off of Lily Street
- On or about July 8 and lasting for five weeks, South Tyson Avenue under the railroad tracks, between Tyson Avenue and Atlantic Avenue, will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- All traffic and pedestrians will be directed to Tulip Avenue
- The construction team will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work site to minimize interruptions and to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic
Wall Construction
- Along Terrace Avenue, beginning at Plainfield Avenue, sections of the prefabricated wall will be installed
- During the month of June, the support of excavation was completed
- Various machinery will be working along the right-of-way
- Crews will utilize western-most ballfield (The Pit) and the Village of Floral Park DPW yard for staging, accessing the LIRR right-of-way, and to receive daily delivery of the prefabricated wall
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
- During the month of June, the support of excavation was completed
Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, LIRR forces will be working along the railroad right-of-way
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- These activities are ongoing across the Main Line corridor and Hempstead Branch, and may include: regular track inspection & maintenance, rail tie replacement, track raising for both Track 1 and Track 2 work, which will include overnight and weekend work, and grade crossing elimination work
