One of the reasons 3rd Track Constructors is proud to be part of the LIRR Expansion Project is the improvement it will bring for railroad customers, drivers, and pedestrians along the Main Line corridor. Today, we saw one example of how this work is important to these commuters and communities.
At the New Hyde Park Road grade crossing today, a vehicle struck and broke one of the crossing gates. Luckily, damage was limited, but it could have been worse. From 2007 to 2017, there were six fatal accidents at grade crossing locations along the LIRR Main Line Corridor.
At-grade crossings have always been a challenge to drivers, pedestrians and railroad passengers since train travel began. Eliminating grade crossings and replacing them with underpasses for vehicles and pedestrians will reduce the number of these incidences along the LIRR.
As part of the LIRR Expansion project, seven at-grade crossings, including this one at New Hyde Park Road, will be eliminated. We look forward to completing this work and reducing the dangers of having rail traffic, vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic combine.
