Westbury
The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, is now underway throughout the communities along a nearly ten mile stretch of mainline track.
The duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction. The project elements are phased to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of May, you will see crews in and around Westbury conducting pre-construction activities for the Westbury North Parking Structure, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. By way of explaination:
Westbury North Parking Structure
- The Westbury North parking lot closed in April and will closed for the remainder of construction. During this closure, 3TC will:
- Provide a free shuttle bus between the Westbury Station and The Source Mall
- Create a shuttle stop along Union Avenue at the base of the easternmost stairwell for the westbound platform
- Create a shuttle stop at the alternate parking location at The Source Mall (Fortunoff Way and Old Country Road). Please click here for more information
- Signage directing commuters and parkers of the closure and alternate parking locations have been posted
- Provide a free shuttle bus between the Westbury Station and The Source Mall
- Beginning on or about May 13, and lasting for approximately two weeks, to prepare for the construction of the foundation of the garage, soldier piles will be installed/driven into the ground in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration monitoring devices are being utilized
Existing Structure Surveys
- Vibranalysis Inc., an independent consulting firm, will be in Westbury to performing pre-construction photo inspections and surveys of homes and businesses in and around the future home of the Westbury North Parking Structure
- The surveys are conducted to ensure that properties located within a specified radius of construction activities are protected in the unlikely event of any damage
- Inspections consist of photographs and written documentation, recording the existing conditions of the interiors and exteriors of the structures
Wall Construction
- A sound wall will be installed along Ellison and Madison Avenues on the south side of the tracks
- Shafts will be drilled on the north side of the tracks from Ellison to Post Avenues
- Support of excavation will continue on the south side of the tracks from Madison to Post Avenues
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, LIRR forces will be working along the railroad right-of-way
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- These activities are ongoing across the Main Line corridor, and may include: regular track inspection & maintenance, rail tie replacement, and grade crossing elimination
