New Hyde Park
The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, is now underway throughout the communities along a nearly ten mile stretch of mainline track.
The duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction. The project elements are phased to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of May, you will see construction crews performing work in New Hyde Park, including surveying, testing, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. By way of explanation:
Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination Project
- Significant construction activity along Covert Avenue will continue throughout May. You will see crews:
- Excavating and installing lagging to support the upcoming installation of retaining walls on the north and south sides of the tracks
- Drilling and installing ties and wales (wooden supports) to brace the bulkhead on the north and south sides
- Installing rebar to prepare for the pouring of pile caps and the installation of support struts
- The full closure of Covert Avenue began on April 15th. The closure is expected to last for six months
- After extensive traffic impact studies and with input from local officials, a detour plan was designed to navigate around the closure as easily as possible. Click here to see the detour map
- Businesses along Covert Avenue will remain accessible throughout construction
New Hyde Park Road Grade Crossing Elimination Project
