Floral Park
The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, is now underway throughout the communities along a nearly ten mile stretch of mainline track.
The duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction. The project elements are phased to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of May, you will see crews continuing heavy construction activities in Floral Park, along with crews performing surveys, testing, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. By way of explanation:
South Tyson Viaduct Expansion
- Phase 2 of this activity – on the east side of South Tyson Avenue – continues, with construction crews:
- Making room for the expansion of the bridge by cutting, demolishing and excavating concrete
- Installing rebar in preparation of pouring concrete for the bridge foundation
- Installing new, underground conduit boxes to accommodate electrical system for the bridge
- The 18 “interior” parking spaces and the six parking spaces along the east side of the street, under the viaduct, remain unavailable for use
- Pedestrian access is closed on the east side of South Tyson Avenue under the viaduct
- Pedestrians are directed to the west side sidewalk
- Temporary alternate parking, with lighting, is available at 50 Carnation Avenue, with entrance off of Lily Street
- The construction team will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work site to minimize interruptions and to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic
- In coordination with the Village, and in an effort to make the area easier to navigate, additional crossing guards will be provided
Wall Construction
- Along Terrace Avenue, beginning at Plainfield Avenue, sections of soldier piles and sheet piles will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Soldier piles and sheet piles are installed by vibratory hammers to provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall
- A small backhoe and various machinery will be working on the right-of-way
- The south wall will be delivered and installed, along with the installation of tiebacks
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration are continuously monitored
Floral Park Station Elevators
- Preliminary work to support the installation of new elevators will begin, including preliminary electrical work and power access to support the installation
- Elevators will be ADA-compliant and will provide easier access to the platforms on both sides of the station
Linden Avenue Pedestrian Underpass
- The Linden Avenue Pedestrian Underpass will be demolished temporarily and rebuilt following the construction of the retaining and sound walls
- The Floral Park Recreation Center will remain accessible through other egress points
- Soldier piles and sheet piles are installed by vibratory hammers to provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall
- Sections of soldier piles and sheet piles will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Construction crews will also install tiebacks on the south side to anchor the retaining walls
- Crews will utilize western-most ballfield (The Pit) and the Village of Floral Park DPW yard for staging and accessing the LIRR right-of-way
Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- Excavation and installation of soldier piles, which will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support for work in and around the Floral Park substation
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, LIRR forces will be working along the railroad right-of-way
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- These activities are ongoing across the Main Line corridor, and may include: regular track inspection & maintenance, rail tie replacement, and grade crossing elimination
