Carle Place
The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, one of the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure projects, is now underway throughout the communities along a nearly ten mile stretch of mainline track.
The duration and intensity of work depends on the project element under construction. The project elements are phased to reduce the amount of disruption in any given community at any given time.
During the month of May, you will see crews performing work in Carle Place, including surveying, testing, ongoing rodent control, and monitoring construction activities for noise, dust, and vibration. By way of explanation:
Cherry Lane Bridge Replacement
- The temporary daytime detour on the north side of Cherry Lane Bridge between Atlantic Avenue and Mineola Avenue will continue through May. Some of the work may take place during the weekend
- Under the existing Cherry Lane Bridge, pedestrian access is closed on the west side of Cherry Lane. Pedestrians will be directed to the sidewalk on the east side of Cherry Lane
- The southbound lane of Cherry Lane will be narrowed
- The construction team will provide cones, flagmen and signage at the work site to minimize interruptions and to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic
- Specific to the construction of the bridge, the following activities will take place:
- The setting of formwork and installation of rebar supports for the bridge
- The installation of waterproof components of the main bridge structure
- The main components of the bridge will be “rolled” into place the first weekend of June
- Vehicles and pedestrians will be blocked from accessing the area under Cherry Lane Bridge, while the bridge is “rolled” into place
Carle Place Station Enhancement Project
- During the month of May you will see crews:
- Installing modular walls on the south side of the platform, including backfilling after excavation
- Installing temporary platform on the northeast side of the station
- Installing a temporary staircase and guardrails on the northwest side of the platform
- Installing precast footings, rebar and formwork to support the south side platform
- The staircases accessing the eastbound and westbound platforms on Cherry Lane are closed until further notice
- The westernmost portion of both eastbound and westbound platforms are also closed
- Please use Garden Avenue and/or Carle Road (south of the tracks) to access the eastbound platform
- Please use Stonehinge Lane and/or Carle Road (north of the tracks) to access the westbound platform
- To board/exit trains at Carle Place Station, please be prepared to board and exit all trains (westbound and eastbound) from the first six (6) cars
- Some of the work on the Carle Place Station Enhancement project may occur during the overnight shift and on the weekend
Wall Construction
- Along the right-of-way, sections of sheet piles, recycled steel with interlocking edges, will be installed in sequence to form a wall for earth support
- Installed by vibratory hammers, sheet piles provide the support necessary for the construction of the retaining wall
- Installation of rebar and setting formwork to prepare for the pouring of concrete to create the southeast and southwest walls
- Clearing and grubbing along the south side Right of Way from Madison Avenue to Post Avenue
- Drilling shafts, including concrete truck deliveries, from Ellison Avenue to Post Avenue along the north side of the right of way
- Excavation along the south side of the right of way making way for the installation of sound walls on that side.
- In adherence to our commitment to minimize disruption to the community, noise, dust, and vibration monitoring devices are deployed
- While crews will access the right-of-way via Garden Avenue, using 15-feet of Charles J. Fuschillo Park, the park will remain open and the construction work will not impact its availability. Foam padding was installed along the 3TC construction fence facing the field
LIRR Work along the Railroad Right-of-Way
- In addition to 3TC’s activities, LIRR forces will be working along the railroad right-of-way
- To avoid LIRR service interruptions during peak commuting hours, LIRR work along the railroad right-of-way may take place overnight and on weekends
- These activities are ongoing across the Main Line corridor, and may include: regular track inspection & maintenance, rail tie replacement, and grade crossing elimination
