Another major component of the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, and part of the broader LIRR initiative to strengthen the reliability and resiliency of LIRR infrastructure, is the replacement and modification of eight bridges.
Many of the bridges along the Main Line have been in service for more than 60 years. The low-hanging bridges have been the sites of many accidents over the years, due to trucks striking the bridges. These accidents cause train delays in both directions, while LIRR crews work to determine the safety and structural stability of the bridges before restoring train service.
In addition to providing sufficient clearance for trucks to safely pass underneath it, the new bridges will include an additional track. The eight bridges to be replaced/modified include:
1. South Tyson Avenue Bridge, Floral Park
2. Plainfield Avenue Bridge, Floral Park
3. Tanners Pond/Denton Avenue Bridge, Garden City
4. Nassau Boulevard Bridge, Garden City
5. Glen Cove Road Bridge, Carle Place
6. Meadowbrook Parkway Bridge, Carle Place
7. Cherry Lane Bridge, Carle Place
3TC has a unique approach to eliminating these crossings:
1. Widen the abutment
2. Erect new bridge over existing roadway on temporary supports
3. For one month, as a bridge is erected into place, 9-hour daily road closures will occur and will re-open at night
4. Shift the bridge into final location over a single weekend
5. Replace sidewalk and repave road
